This week has been a very interesting one indeed for Nokia, especially with the leaked information of Nokia’s eventual transition to the Maemo operating software. What’s behind all this talk of Maemo anyway, how is this new revelation affect us(the mobile geeks), well let me make a few points to elucidate on this topic.
Number One
As its been already described in the leaked image of the Maemo OS, hence forward MOS, only high end devices will carry this so called superior OS. Why did Nokia all of a sudden come out and leak this information? C’mon who else is going to leak this type of information, coincidence or not, the rabbit is out of the hat. Well, a number reasons I suppose but what jumps out at some of the staff members of NMT and I, is that Nokia is fishing for public reaction. Let’s face it, the Nokia blogosphere is driven by Nokia fanboys/girls and this is certainly news worthy because it represents a change in our “modi operandi” which means Latin for modes of operation.
Number Two
The Symbian OS can’t go head to head with Google’s Android in the long run. Android is already in version 1.5 and quickly coming of age and Symbian has gone as far as it can already. Google has once again proved to the world that Open Source is the way to go and as a result of that, Nokia and its partners fumbled and what came out of this uncomfortable scenario was the Symbian Foundation, the multi-partner strategy with Samsung and Sony Ericcson to help Symbian open its doors to a new world of opportunities and development. We’re still waiting.
Number Three
After touting the Symbian Foundation as the panacea for mobile realted problems between the inner technical dealings of Samsung, Sony and Nokia. Nokia and its partners realized that once again they may have rushed out of the gates too quickly. As we have read that the Symbian Foundation will be this and that, and its gonna be great there will be a democratic process to our decision making, we will each have a single vote to cast and so on. And I actually respect Nokia’s expository rhetorical assertions here, they’re quite wise in their word selection, democratic , democratic has a nice tone, it means we’re all equal, there will not be any issues here, after all we each have one vote. The word democratic consciously and subconsciously appeases our minds, it actually gives us a false sense of security that things will always be ok. We are still waiting for this to come to fruition as I said above. But guess what, the chips have turned again and things are not as they seem. The Symbian Powers have spoken and decided that MOS is the way to go because apparently its got more scalability for all the things they want to do in the future. I’m not a developer so I can’t comment on this and my opinion is strictly an intuition after reading countless articles on these topics.
Number Four
Well s60 will become the new s40 , you may be saying, “say what, what do you mean” how do you like that, the phone you paid for $600 dollars ie. N97 and the likes, will now cost you $250-$275 dollars, why, well its simple the technology is no longer new, Maemo is the new kid on the block bringing new possibilities, so Nokia being the global market leader will simply slash prices to gather more of the main stream cellular public especially in the United States were the competition is fierce especially with RIM. Its not a farfetched assumption, stop for a moment and think about this, what better way to entice the public than with affordable flashy multimedia phones ie. N97 to combat all your their desires to get an iphone 3.0. We all know the iphone platform is not all its cut out to be as a fully dependable multimedia smartphone but the mainstream public out there is still drooling over the browser and the fart applications and are willing to over look many things we in the Nokia/Symbian world enjoy daily. Anyway enough said for today, who really knows what’s going to happen – perhaps OPK can trickle some hints at us, we’ll see.
