After having the N95 8GB for a few days and experiencing all the photos I’ve taken over the weekend I must say I’m very impressed with the optics of this device, but all these good feelings just make me think that perhaps my perfect choice will be the Nokia N86 which is the logical successor the N95.

The specs on the N86 are truly impressive and worth mentioning is the FP2 operating system which is more seasoned and refined that FP1, this alone is an upgrade to the N95 8GB. And to be perfectly clear I’m not dismissing the prowess of the N95 8GB, au contraire, I’m just highlighting some basic differences which are improvements.

1. S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2

Need I say anymore, its so much more refined in every way and it really is a pleasure to use

2. 8 mp Camera

I’ve seen shots from our friend Steve Litchfield(previously interviewed here) from AAS and the optics are still amazing and building on a solid foundation which the N95 has clearly left us.

3. Build Quality

This device has clearly been a mixture of the Nseries with Eseries and the build components have nothing to envy any other mobile phone. The build is solid as a rock. An important factor for the life of the phone.

4. OLED screen

These screens are just amazing, they are more efficient and hence has less of an effect on the battery leading to a longer battery life and on a phone like this, you need all the power you can save to continue to snap pictures. I’ve owned the N85 some months ago and I must say the clarity of the text is amazing, so I’m sure the experience will be the same on the N86. Good choice here Nokia.

5. Ovi Maps 3.0

If you have not seen Ovi Maps 3.0 then you’re really missing out, its a must download folks and it comes preinstalled on the N86

6. Nokia Messaging

Again the native email client of the E75 comes preinstalled in the rom of the N86 and this is truly an option especially since its touch brother, the N97, does not come with Nokia Messaging preinstalled, Nokia what happened here !!

7. Panoramic Option on the Camera

Guys, remember sometime ago that Nokia purchased a company called bitSide. Well bitSide used to make an application called PanoMan (which I actually bought directly through them) that allows you take multiple shots and then it unites them and forms a great panoramic shot, well guess what now that feature is included in the firmware of the N86 making the camera so much more sweeter. Good acquisition here Nokia

8. Size

This phone seems so pocketable its not even funny, well at least its more pocketable than the N97, so for me this is definitely food for thought and yes size does matter in an MID.

Well I’m sure there are more reasons to come when I actually purchase or trial the device but for me the aforementioned list is very compelling. What do you guys think N86 or N97
