In true NMT style today I bring you one of the worlds most renowned and revered Symbian Theme makers, his name is synonymous with pure artistic style, he has served as a role model for everyone including Babi, Dhanusaud, PiZero, and Tehk7, just the mere mention of his name is enough for all theme maker to pay attention to what he has to say, he is currently retired from theme making but still cruises the forums staying upto date on the current Symbian news, without further ado, in what will surely be a moment to remember, I know it will be for me, I present you P@sco.
Tell us a little bit about your background and what lead you to start developing Symbian themes?
I started developing themes just because there was no one at that time. I had the opportunity to work with some of the greatest themes designer since theme studio 1.2 was the program for theme making, and we made some of the first themes ever in symbian community, helping each other as a great family should do. It was many more complicated than now, and we had a very hard work to do for discovering all various way for developing, as nokia didn’t helped us at beginning…
How much time did it take to develop your themes, as far as coding the actual theme and which programming language was used? ?
First times, it was a very hard work, as I already wrote. It took weeks, or months in some cases, to build a good theme, with 3rd party icons, masks, transparency etcetera. Using theme studio became a sort of nightmare for us, and the launch of Carbide.Ui has been an enormous opportunity for building a good theme in few time. As you probably noticed, since the launch of Carbide.Ui, theme developing took a speed up.
I know your retired from creating themes for personal reasons and I respect that but tell us what you miss the most after being away for some time already creating themes and Symbian in general?
Unfortunately I have no more time for developing, I’m going to graduate so I need all the free time I have for studying and obviously for my personal life, and developing themes and writing for my personal blog about symbian phones took too much time, so I decided to stop for a while. I really miss that, but I’m sure I made the right thing, and in future, if free time will be enough, i’m surely going to come in business again. The thing I miss the most is the possibility to speak with so many people and collaborate with them for something. I really hope to enjoy again that kind of partnership with users and theme makers.
What are your favorite Symbian applications can you list your top 5 and why you like them?
Really hard to choose, I use a lot of applications and 5 are really few for a list, but let’s try:
What’s your favorite theme from your collection?
I think Firefox themes I made for 2nd edition are still my favourites.
What are your thoughts on the future of Nokia and the newly created Symbian Foundation?
The birth of the Foundation it’s a great opportunity for Symbian Users. As you know, the best part of smartphones market has been shared for years between symbian and windows mobile, with no many differences in developing until the arrive of Apple’s iPhone. Not much to say about it, simply iPhone push up developing of other platforms too, so the creation of the Foundation was obvious, if Symbian would like to be the first again.
What are you favorite Themers can you list your top 5 ?
Hard to choose again, except for first and second positions that are the same from years:
What advice can you give to new developers/themers?
Just try to innovate. Most of the things a theme maker could do has been done, I know, but I see a lot of themes similar to others, and it’s not good that.
Which Themes do you enjoy that are not yours?
My favorite, still in use, is NG by babi, really simple and nice to see on the phone.
Which Nokia phones have you used in the past?
