OVI Store Statistics Symbian Developers rejoice

nokia-ovi-logo.jpg

Great news from the Ovi store, good ole Jan Ole Suhr, the developer of the best Symbian application Gravity, just retweeted something that grabbed my attention and it was a link to the Ovi Store statistics and Nokia displaying some impressive numbers. I highlight some of theme here for you guys.

At a high level, Ovi Store provides developers with unmatched distribution opportunities:

Global reach: more than 190 countries, available in 30 languages

Local relevance: content from over 90 countries

Adaptable: 120 device models offer Ovi Store content

Convenient: payment options include mobile billing with 85 operators in 26 countries and credit card billing in most countries

More than 120 devices are supported,
70+ are Symbian devices
Six of the top nine downloading devices are touch devices: 5800 XpressMusic, N97, N97mini,
5530 XpressMusic, 5230 Nuron, and X6 where available

Prominent Eseries devices included the E63, E71 & E72
The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic & 2700 are the top downloading Series 40 devices
Markets

The most active countries in alphabetical order are: China, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, and UK

Over 80% of these consumers can purchase from Ovi Store using their local currency
In countries where mobile billing is available, more than 2/3 of customers choose this payment option

With support for 30 language variations, 90% of Ovi Store visitors are using their local language when available

There are 1.7 million downloads a day with more than 75% of downloads being apps

Offscreen Technologies has had more than 34 million downloads

This is great news, I actually thought the Ovi Store was doing a lot worse but these are some very nice and young numbers as I am sure that in the next 24 months these numbers should increase dramatically with devices rocking Symbian 4.

Nokia please pay large sums of money so that popular apps in the Apple and Android app store get ported over to Symbian, its only money for you guys and if you choose not to advertise all that much in certain markets ie. United States, then let your application platform do the talking. Some of the apps we need are:

A quick ass Facebook application, not the current one
A killer Twitter app or why not just buy Gravity and port it natively with all devices, Twitter bought Tweetie for the Iphone and now its a native app with some killer functionality so in my opinion Gravity and Jan Ole Suhr can fill that void and ramify from the Gravity framework to other apps, just a thought Nokia but why compete with the best application out there, hmm.

Guys we also need a revamped PIM set of applications but ahh tons more, I digress, you guys already know but you must be like the American company Nike.

New Twitter Client for Symbian called Trill

A new twitter client has arisen for Symbian with a very unique and cute name, its called Trill. It looks very basic and certainly not at the level of Gravity but its in the same leagues as other 3rd tier twitter clients, you really just have to see for yourself. Its free and perhaps its a good match for someone who just needs something basic. Ovi store link

Nokia N8 available in China already

nokia n8

Very interesting and check out the price $917.82 dollars, oh my, I can put another $70 buy a Mac Book for that price. In my opinion, the N8 is too overpriced, Nokia should price this handset at a modest $479.99 USD to garnish market share. I’m afraid at those skyrocket prices we’ll be looking at another Nokia N900 ordeal.

Web site already has available for sale the Nokia N8 for 6300 yuan = 917.82 USD, also have a physical store located in Beijing. You´ll see all the images in the store and it seems that it is not a fake or a clone N8. CEO Lee Williams also announced via Twitter Symbian this week They will make an important announcement and he is already in China and although officially announced another brand with the New Renovated Symbian, here is the proof that he has gone on sale first Nokia Symbian N8

Silicon Valley chimes in on Nokia

Silicon Valley chimes in on Nokia

It seems like the Silicon Valley folks are chiming in according to Bloomberg and telling us what they think Nokia needs amidsts all the turbulence that’s been going lately, with talks of ousting OPK and the Nokia N8 coming soon, it almost seems like it too much to handle to quick. Only time will tell and the devices will speak for themselves. The N8 has lots of expectations and I surely do hope that Nokia can meet those. I cheering for you guys Nokia, make it happen, dazzle us with your innovations.

The Apple brand promises fun, the BlackBerry brand stands for serious work, but what does Nokia stand for?,” said Ulf Moritzen, who helps manage 1 billion euros ($1.29 billion) at Hamburg-based Aramea Asset Management including Nokia shares. “Nokia needs someone who positions the company in an aggressive and clear way.

Nokia fights backs

As many readers know by now Nokia has a new head of Mobile Solutions, he’s name is Anssi Vanjoki, a member of the Nokia Illuminati one could say and he’s words have reached millions of Symbian users around the world. With promises of regaining Nokia’s leadership in this saturated mobile market, this could well be what Nokia needed, a true gunner at the helm, to captivate the world of advanced mobile phone users and lead into unchartered territories. As Bob Dylan sang “Times are Changing” and we can only hope that this new leadership will reinvigorate the Finnish giant and hopefully compete in a world that seems that’s all about the Droid and iPhone. Here are a few excerpts from his recent post.

it’s my aim to ensure Nokia stays as the market and intellectual leader in creating the digital world. I’m under no illusions; it’s no small task.

I am committed, perhaps even obsessed, with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices. Achieving this will require performance and efforts over and above the norm. This is a role I’ve personally been preparing for over the last 20 years. We have all the assets — including R&D and product development – at our disposal under one roof – to produce killer smartphones and market-changing mobile computers.

Horizon Black by Dhanusaud

Wow, it has been a while since I’ve seen this level of workmanship on a Symbian theme but Dhanusuad has once again impressed with his attention to detail. He recently released Horizon for Symbian devices running s60v5

Horizon is made from screenshots taken from Nokia N8 theme & some of the elements are used from Nokia 6700 slide original Nokia theme. This theme may not work with s60v3 or e-series handsets as it is only for s60v5.

So I loaded it on my XM 5530 and wow it looks lovely so I’m sure it looks amazing on the Nokia N97 or Nokia 5800, download it here and hey in case you missed my interview with Dhanusuad you can check it out here as well. Cheers

Nokia C6 quite a little gadget

Nokia C6 quite a little gadget

The Nokia C6 is a good example of an entry level slider phone with touch screen functionalities that combines the power of QWERTY keyboard. It is a S60 smart phone with some high end features to lure the target audience. The mobile phone was officially launched in April 2010, and it is expected to release within the second quarter of the year. The device has certain resemblance with the fabulous Nokia N97, but there are certain differences as well. The trackpad that comes with N97 is expected to be back with C6. Furthermore, the slider option of the C6 is more conventional than the N97 models where the phone gets slightly angled towards the user when the slider is opened.

Nokia E73 coming soon on T-Mobile USA

In a totally surprising move its being reported by Engadget that T-Mobile USA will be releasing a follow up to the famous Nokia E72 this upcoming June. T-Mobile USA loves adding names to their Nokia lineup and this one is being touted as the E73 Mode, don’t know why the name “mode” is being used but my only guess is the dual mode that started with the Nokia E71 and continued with the Nokia E72 will also be used on the Nokia E73. I’m personally very happy because it means it will have the T-Mobile 3G 1700 bandwith which should be make this device pretty snappy. Let’s just hope that Nokia Messaging is up to speed on this device and since this device is hitting mainstream America soon. Good job Nokia I’m proud of you guys. (more…)

Board of Directors wants OPK out

It seems like OPK “Kenobe” is on the hot seat with the board of directors and there is talk of him getting replaced. I must say I’m a bit shocked but another side of me just simply isn’t. It is true that Nokia sells million of phones worldwide but in the very competitive smartphone market Nokia’s performance has truly been lackluster. I think we can all remember the Nokia N97 fiasco and the reduced sized N97 Mini of examples of what could have been but wasn’t. (more…)

Friendly Fire from Nokia to NokiaBR

Friendly Fire from Nokia to NokiaBR

Friendly Fire from Nokia After almost three years and hundreds of posts only about Nokia, the Brazilian blog called NokiaBR was closed on last Jan 5th by a cease and desist letter sent from Nokia asking the blog owner to stop using the domain name “nokiabr.com.br”, the name “Nokia” on blog name (NokiaBR), and its colors (green and blue). The blog was written by a big Nokia fan called José Antonio Oliveira.

Maemo combines with Moblin now called Meego

This years MWC did not have any new Nokia devices to flaunt instead we now have Meego. What’s Meego you may ask yourselves? Meego is simply a “hybrid version of Nokia’s Maemo OS and Intel’s Moblin. This platform will be used to power the smartphones of tomorrow and will also be powerful enough to be used on Netbooks.” Will it be successful, who knows but I suppose this the death of regular Maemo as we know it then. Will the N900 be fully compatible with Meego, well we just have to wait and see but for now I suppose developers are going crazy. One day Maemo now Meegoo, what’s next Nokia MeegooSymb lol.

Pixelpipe adds more pipes

My favorite social media aggregation tool, Pixelpipe, just had a huge monster update last night and things just keep getting better and better for the San Francisco startup that now can probably be called the king of social media. Great job guys but I must say I’m really curious about you’re tweet from last week hinting at a possible native s60 Pixelpipe application due to the limitations of Share Online.  Anyway, check out the services below and see if you fancy any of them. I already setup Google OCR and have been getting good results after my initial test.
