I still remember the day I received my E71 from Dell. The built quality was simply outstanding and having come from the Blackberry and WinMo world it was a refreshing breath on my mobile lifestyle. I quickly discovered how awesome it handled the native Google apps like Gmail, Google Maps, and Youtube which were and still are one of my favorite set of apps in any mobile platform. (more…)

Twittermania and S60

It was not long ago that the S60 community was aching for some good Twitter clients for their mobile phones, now it seems like we have an army of them. First we had some J2ME clients that filled the void, among some of those were the front runners like Twibble now in version 0.98 with Twitpic support and Snaptu. Then came Tommi Laukkanen’s Twim, another Java client, which runs quite smoothly and even has Twitpic support.
Side Note: Tommi also created a client for the Identica platform called Mobidentica

Then about a month ago two mobile giants entered the mobile scene Gravity and Twittix the two native Nokia clients. And all of a sudden tons of people were tweetering around the globe. These last two clients have made tweetering a true delight and even give a destkop feel ala Tweetdeck. Now are choices are plentiful so just download the clients and give them a try, some will like Gravity, yet some will like Twittix, and still some may like Twibble but the important thing is that we have a true twitter programming democracy upon us, so let us all enjoy the moment and Twitter on my friends.

Lets highlight some of Twittix main features:
- All Twitter functions: Tweet, Reply, Direct Message, ReTweet, Follow, Unfollow, Create
- Search function and Auto Update
- Tabbed view of Timeline, Replies, Messages, Favorites, Followers, Followings
- Get users profiles directly out of tweets; Open URL from any Tweet
- Real time number counter; Followers and Following lists
- Build-in Theme support and Portrait and Landscape Mode
- Support of build-in accelerator
- Symbian Signed certificated; Lifetime free updates
- English and German version available

Here are some of Gravity’s main features
– Compatible with Twitter and Laconica
– All functions available on your S60 phone: tweet, reply, DM, follow & unfollow, create favourites, search, auto-update and many more …
– Tabbed view of your Timeline, Replies, Messages, Friends, …
– Configurable Audio Alerts for Timeline/Replies/DM’s
– Setup and use as many accounts as you want at the same time
– Group support for creating custom tabs with user-defined filters (S60v3)
– Twitter-Search section with multiple search tabs and Twitter Trends
– Post pictures to MobyPicture and TwitPic
– Preview pictures from MobyPicture or TwitPic

Getting Things Done with your Nokia S60

Getting Things Done (Gtd) is the brainchild of David Allen. If you’ve been around the World Wide Web anytime within the last 6 years then you’ve probably heard that term thrown around. The ideas and concepts espoused by Gtd have revolutionized the corporate world, the mobile technological savvy and even soccer moms, along with inspiring a plethora of web and mobile applications. What’s the best way to have a Gtd system integrated with our beloved smartphones? The answer is, anyway you want, and thanks to the reliability and stability of the S60 operating system all things are possible.

Let us quickly review, the main tenets of Gtd

  1. Collecting or capturing anything that has your attention personal or work.

  2. Defining actionable things into outcomes and specific next actions, in other words, processing on the front end and not in the back end when things blow up.

  3. Organizing reminders and information in the most efficient way in appropriate place holders ie. categories based on how and when you need to access them and folks this is really the key to the whole process

Key Terms to know

  1. Next Actions – anything you have to do personal or work. For example, Pickup dry cleaning at Joe’s Cleaners, this would be placed in a category called @errands, the “@” sign symbolizes the word action meaning ‘action errands’

  2. Projects – any outcome you want to complete that will literally take more than two action steps.

David Allen has written extensively about Project Management in all his books and in an email exchange I had with him about 4 years ago he clarified a lot of my questions. D.A. basically said “how are you going to remember all the things you want to do if you can’t keep accurate track of them.” Projects are like stake holders in the ground, they are just meant to serve as place holders of a multi-action outcome and as you know we all have a bunch of those. Let us say you have a project called ‘Car Tune Up’ unless you walk outside with a wrench in hand and are ready to get your hands greasy then ‘Car Tune Up’ is a multi-action outcome. 1st Next Action – Call the garage to see if they can take the car, this would go in your @phone or @calls category but wait, do we have the phone number to the garage hmm, I don’t, so I guess I need to get the phone number of the garage first (this would be a BFO as David Allen says a “blind flash of obvious). Upon further review, you remember that Mary your neighbor recommended this garage to you last week as you both watered the front lawn, so I guess you have to ask Mary for the phone number, so this next action would be placed in your @home or @calls or @agenda (this category is great because you can populate it with the names of people you come across with all the time and you have actions that involve them in some way, shape, or form). And the thought process continues and eventually you think about the several actions that need to happen to get this project off and rolling but remember if “Life” happens to come at you at 100 mph and you have to divert your focus to other things, its ok, because you already have defined on the front end what needs to be done to continue your projects when your ready to go back to them and that’s the beauty of Gtd, having your trusty and reliable system that without fail you can always refer back to and get back on the wagon.

Well enough said, if you have not read the book, then I encourage you to read it, it’s a great book. Now let’s move onto the actual operation of this system. What software or applications are you going to need to setup a Gtd system on the Nokia S60 platform? Simple, any Nokia S60, lol, I use an E71 just because I like firing off next actions at the speed of light on a qwerty keyboard but really any Nokia will suffice. Eventually you get so good at this that it becomes intuitive and really the tool just becomes an extension of yourself, so even a non-qwerty device like any N-Series phone will do just fine as well.

Applications I’ve used before that are handy for a Gtd system

  • Projekt

  • The regular PIM functions of any Nokia in combination with Ovi on the web

  • SBSH Papyrus

  • Handy Calendar

  • Google Calendar in combination with GooSync

  • Gravity – a native Twitter client

Some web based systems that work great on the mobile side are Vitalist and Remember the Milk. Again the choices are endless and only limited by your imagination and your software but as you can see there are many shoes in this store and one is going to fit your style. In the coming days I’ll be sharing with you my current setup which uses the following applications:

    1. SBSH Papyrus

    2. GooSync

    3. Google Calendar and

    4. Google Sync

    5. SWIM and Ovi Sync

#Gravity 1.08 Beta now supports groups

Gravity, the native s60 Twitter client, in its latest beta version 1.08, now supports the creation of groups. This is an awesome feature which creates tons of possibilities. I just created a groups called “News” to which I polled all news twitter feeds that I follow ie. CNN, WSJ, TechCrunch, etc and now I have an RSS type stream of news channels uncluttered with my other tweets. A feature I would like to see is for Gravity to have an option to hide the group members from the regular timeline, the ideal option would let us(the users) have the ability to have both 1. Choose which group members to show up in both the timeline and the group and 2. To completely hide from the timeline. Nevertheless, its a group option as is.

Note to the Developer

@Janole, this feature rocks and its a great addition to Gravity, I’m very impressed with the way your handling Gravity’s development, congrats and keep up the good work.

How to update your Facebook status via Gravity

Gravity and Facebook is a match made in heaven. So the question now becomes, “How can we update our Facebook Status via our beloved Gravity ?” Its easy, first setup another Twitter account ie. Lastname + facebook, so my new twitter account is called ledesmafacebook, I guess you can really call it whatever you want but I like to add the Facebook part. Then go to iconspedia.com and search for a cool Facebook icon to add to the web Twitter account as your avatar, here is my Gravity main screen as an example.

scr000010.jpg

Then goto Facebook and add the Twitter application, give it all the permissions it asks of you and put in your new twitter username account. Why create a separate Twitter ? Simple, so you don’t have to not mix your Twitter updates with your Facebook status updates.

If you want to consolidate your Twitter and Facebook updates then input your main Twitter username to the Facebook twitter application and everytime you update your Twitter then it will automatically update your Facebook as well. I personally don’t really like that, but its an option and can work for some folks who don’t really update all that much.

The second method is to use your new Twitter account which you can quickly add thru Gravity and really have the best of both worlds. Now if Gravity supported Ping.fm or Hellotxt I guess we would be total heaven, so until then, this is a very nice, smooth, and functional alternative. So go ahead and give it a try, it may work for you as well as it works for me.

Does Gravity, an s60 Twitter app, provide a true value

Well, I couldn’t be happier, the wait has been worth it.  Gravity has gotten tons of publicity in Twitter and its much deserved, @janole (twitter screen name) is the creator of this wonderful application. Just a few moments ago some folks have voiced there concerns in regard to Gravity’s price tag $10 USD. Well, lets analyze this for a minute what can you buy for ten dollars that literally gives you a nice ROI(return on investment). Well, let us start by defining ROI, ROI is a performance measure used to evaluate the efficiency of an investment or to compare the efficiency of a number of different investments.

roib

Now let’s focus on the “Gain from Investment(GFI)” part of the equation. How can we measure this gain. Well GFI can be measured objectively and subjectively once the proper parameters of measuring the aforementioned terms are applied. In reality its quite simple, first we need to define a rubric with the things we consider important whether its objective or subjective. In my case, I happen to love Twitter and all its 3rd Party integration ie. Facebook and Vitalist just name a couple. So my GFI is quite high if I can get an application that simplifies my data entry into the aforementioned sites, then for its super worth it for me to have such an application. Vitalist handles all of my “Getting Things Done” system  so I’m happy with that and Facebook keeps me connected to the friends and family and that alone is invaluable. So ten dollars to keep me connected to Twitter, Facebook, Vitalist, and as a result being productive and simplifying my digital access to these sites is well worth the $10. Just look at the Smartphoneware and Epocware set of applications(which I also happen to own a few), most of these are overpriced if you ask me but I’m sure they still hold a high ROI for some folks who actually pay for these, nevertheless, this is all very subjective and to each his own, if you happened to have been in the private beta and gotten a freebie, then that’s cool but saying this application is overpriced its a bit ludicrous, for those who feel this way I guess they haven’t been to Starbucks where a Cafe Latte and a snack will put you $10 under easily, lol, but anyway this is all trivial and enough said by Gravity folks you won’t regret your Twitter experience will jump to the next level with this application.

Twitter Battles, let the competition begin

Its pretty cool that the s60 Twitter battles have begun, the community really needed this type of support from developers, a very special thanks to @janole, the creator of Gravity which is being released as an Open Beta application this coming Monday, I’m pumped for this release, I can’t remember the last time I had this type of anticipation for an application.

Today we also heard from the folks at mojosmobile.com that they’ll be releasing Twittix or Twitterix. On the python side of things we have Marcelo Barros with ” Iamdoing ” which is also another cool application currently being developed.
